Duties

Prepares and updates the minerals and geology sections through field examinations, research, review of reports, and collaboration with other agencies, institutions, and industry. Reviews mining notices and plans of operations for regulatory and technical adequacy. Calculates reclamation cost estimates and processes mineral material sales and free use permits. Reviews Applications for Permit to Drill (APD) and drilling plans for regulatory and technical accuracy. Evaluates the stratigraphy, hydrology, coring, logging and testing, and geologic hazards and writes geologic reports. Prepares reports and appraisals on mineral leases, sales and mining operations, reviews exploration or development/operating plan for adequacy and prepares mineral reports on salable and locatable mineral potential.

Qualifications

This position is for Recent Graduates who have completed a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous 2 years. You must submit copies of all transcripts that include graduation/degree date, hours, and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Note: Certain veterans precluded from applying within the timeframe due to a military service obligation have up to 6 years from completing their education to apply. Other applicable period includes veterans precluded from applying within the timeframe described above due to a military service obligation, shall have a full 2-year period of eligibility upon his/her release or discharge from active duty. However, in no event, may the individual's eligibility period extend beyond 6 years from the date on which the individual completed the requirements of an academic course of study. This position has an individual occupation requirement that must be met in order to be considered. Please read the Education section to ensure you meet these requirements. In addition to being a recent graduate and meeting the individual occupation requirement, you must meet the specialized experience as outlined below. In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education, specialized experience, and/or both - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To qualify for the GS-09 you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07. Examples of specialized experience may include: performing geological studies and preliminary analyses; performing calculations and applying correction factors; plotting of preliminary prediction values for portions of larger studies; identifying fossils, rock samples, and determining extent of formation; -OR- 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a masters degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study; -OR- have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first year of may be combined with experience. Physical Demands: Work includes both office and field conditions. Office work involves periods of concentration and technical details. Field work requires some physical stamina and may be under arduous conditions including travel by vehicle, ATV, or foot over a variety of terrain and exposure to adverse temperatures and weather conditions. Duties may require bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting moderate to heavy items. May be exposed to wildlife, chemical, or physical hazards. Work Environment: Office environment may include an open setting or cubicles with close proximity to other professional employees. Field conditions include a full range of topographic conditions ranging from rolling plains to steep mountain terrain. May be exposed to surface or underground mines, high and low temperatures, dust, noise, and vibration. Personal protective gear may be required. Will experience high to low seasonal temperatures.

Education

This position has an individual occupational requirement that must be met to be considered. You must meet one of the below requirements:
  1. A degree in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
or
  1. A combination of education and experience that includes course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. Experience that involved only one phase of geology work, e.g., collecting samples, would not be acceptable as providing the required professional knowledge of the theory and principles of geology.
