This position is established at the St. Albans VA Extended Care Center in the Engineering Service. The Pipefitter will perform all necessary installing, repairing and maintenance to the steam producing and using equipment on station. This will include such equipment as radiators, fan coil units, high pressure steam stations, dietetic equipment,etc. Repair and maintenance will also include any boilers and heating systems beyond the central plant.

Duties

The pipefitter will perform all necessary installations, repairs and maintenance to plumbing located on station. This will include cleaning stoppages, installing new sinks, supplying water and drains for washers and other equipment. He will also make repairs to equipment located at the water tower and to such external utilities as fire hydrants, underground shut off valves and water meters. The pipefitter will also install, repair and maintain all piping systems throughout the station (except electrical and refrigeration. These include stand pipe, sprinkler, gas, oxygen, air, vacuum, etc. The pipefitter will work under the general supervision of the pipefitter foreman. He is assigned work orally and by work orders. he will in many cases be responsible for laying out the route to follow and procedure to use accomplish his assignment. He will determine material and equipment needed. All work will be done in a manner consistant with proper trade techniques to assure long term operation. Since most work will be performed under considerable independence and instruction will be usually of a general nature; incumbent must make sound judgments and decisions. Any problems will be discussed with the foreman. The foreman will check the overall work to see that it meets accepted trade standards. All work performed by the Pipefitter will be of the highest quality and will be carried out in such a manner to assure his safety, the safety of his fellow workers, the residents and the least of damage to equipment and building. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Employee will make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Employee will be standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Employee will frequently handle, lift, carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds. Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, and smelly. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The employee is exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Employee may be required to work in areas that have asbestos containing materials and will, therefore, be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and other equipment to prevent possible asbestos exposure. You will be responsible for completing respirator training, fit testing and training in the proper use and maintenance of general PPE.
