Duties
The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is assigned to the Engineering Service of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System, Leavenworth Campus.
The duties of the Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic include but are not limited to the following:
Performs duties in an independent manner under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.
Performs work as an A/C Equipment Maintenance Mechanic in accordance with written and verbal instructions and procedures.
Maintains, stores and safeguards tools, equipment, materials and supplies. Leads employees in work operations and conducts inspections of mechanics work progress and completion.
Exhibits knowledge of a wide range of HVAC Equipment to include but not limited to: Pumps, compressors, Air Handling Units, Building control Systems and Chillers.
Repairs installs, troubleshoots and performs maintenance on vital hospital HVAC/R equipment.
Repairs/Replaces electric motors, Balances Heating/Cooling Systems, Inspects, Adjusts, Cleans and modifies HVAC/R Systems.
Uses measuring devices, tapes, VOA meters, calipers, etc. in repair and diagnosis of assigned equipment.
Interprets readings from analog. digital gauges and meters for diagnosis, repair and maintenance of assigned equipment and systems.
Applies information in maintenance and repair manuals in the repair and upkeep of assigned equipment.
Considers special properties, treatment needed and other factors when selecting materials and parts.
Exhibits and knowledge of EPA rules and regulations governing refrigerants and their use, recycle and disposal.
Note: This position requires that the incumbent hold a Universal Certification.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 8:00am- 4:30pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. Must work in steam manholes, unexcavated cellars, attics, pipe spaces, around boilers and high-pressure steam lines. Subject to possible burns and other construction hazards, above normal temperatures and exposure to toxic and explosive vapors. Required to work in noisy, dusty, dirty, and damp places. Occasionally required to work outdoors in bad weather.
