The technician is physically located on the Bay Pines campus. Responsible for assistance with the overall management of the Cardiac Device Program with Cardiac Providers involved at BPVHCS on a day-to-day basis. Works closely with the Cardiac Device Registered Nurse and Electrophysiology Provider to care for all veterans seen in the Cardiac Device Clinic.
Duties
Technician will have a comprehensive knowledge of the concepts, practices, procedures, and techniques regarding Cardiac Device interrogations and other specialized equipment and considerable skills in applying them to conduct the full range of cardiovascular testing. Evaluates presenting rhythms, and underlying rhythms; capture thresholds, impedances, and arrhythmia logs; and review previous EGMs (electrocardiograms). In correlation with device function and arrhythmia evaluation, the technician reviews the patient's recent history to evaluate therapy appropriateness and initiates reprogramming when necessary. The incumbent has detailed knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of common disease states that could affect pacemakers and other cardiac device tests and may necessitate modifications of procedures and techniques. Interrogates devices; assesses information, including pacing percentage, episodes, battery status, and underlying rhythms. Ability to manage scheduled multiple responsibilities within the clinic. This includes but is not limited to, outpatient visits, remote alerts, patient follow-up, daily and weekly monitoring, recognizing life-threatening alerts, and managing data input into multiple cardiac device databases.
Manages remote cardiac monitoring for AICD and pacemakers, including registration, scheduling, and coordination in accordance with the VA NCDSP. - Documentation of monitoring in CPRS, VISTA for provider review (for Bay Pines Cardiology and CBOC Cardiology); follow up with missed remote downloads and assist patients daily with setting up home monitor equipment for all devices. - Manages remote cardiac monitoring for all Loop recorder monitoring, including registration, scheduling, patient notifications, documentation of monitoring in CPRS for provider review (Bay Pines Cardiology and CBOC Cardiology), and follow-up on missed remote downloads. - Identifies proper device functions and troubleshoots as needed. - Instructs patients on setting up remote monitors and sending transmissions; also provides equipment training, education, and assistance for patients. - Assist provider with in-clinic cardiac device management and device checks, including unscheduled and inpatient device checks. Takes the initiative to learn new developments in the field, recommends changes to improve service, corrects deficiencies, and enhances the reliability of test and treatment results. The procedures and techniques adapted or developed by the technician may be considered to form the basis for hospital standardization. - Knowledge of evaluation and initiation of performance improvement projects, ability to write Policies, Procedures, and Protocol development. - Works under the direction of the Electrophysiology Provider, Registered Nurse, and Cardiac Device Clinic Nurse Manager. - Performs bedside care for inpatient EP Veterans. - Performs regular machine maintenance related to updates and works closely with Biomed. - Assist with device management during MRI. - Any other duty as assigned by the Nurse Manager, supervisor, or Chief of Cardiology. The cardiac catheterization technician at this level aids physicians in aspects of cardiac catheterization and related invasive procedures such as coronary angioplasty, pulmonary angioplasty, and intra-aortic balloon insertion.

Qualifications
Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
English Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
Licensure or Certifications. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must meet the following grade requirements.
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
2. Knowledge of Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.
Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
Special Assignments. Non-supervisory medical instrument technician (cardiac catheterization) may have assignments that because of their nature substantially exceed the full performance level. The Professional Standards Board will review proposed non-supervisory special assignments for the GS-9 level and make a determination regarding their appropriateness. These assignments are expected to be relatively few in number and must represent substantial additional responsibility over the full performance level.
