About the Position: Sierra Army Depot is located in Herlong CA, a rural town in Northern California. Herlong is approximately 60 miles north of Reno, NV, and 35 miles south of Susanville, CA. The depot serves as an Army Expeditionary Logistical Support Center. Employees work Mon-Thurs, 0630-1700 hrs. Youth Facilities and child care available. Mass transportation is available at minimal cost. Surrounding area boasts a full range of outdoor sports/recreation activities.

Duties

Conduct program surveys and inspections for the safety office. Analyze operations to formulate safety policy, plans, and programs. Analyze operations to formulate safety policy, plans, and programs. Establish safety and occupational health policies to develop strategic plans.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a valid, United State issued motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Temporary Duty Travel, TDY may be required up to 5% of the time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights or entitlement based on active military service, recovery from a compensable injury, or return rights based on an overseas tour.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain the Army Safety and Occupational Health Career Program (CP-12) certification within twelve (12) months of placement.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain the Hazardous Waste (HAZWOPER) certification within six (6) months of placement.
  • Position may be converted to permanent without further competition.
  • Temporary promotion may be made or extended up to a maximum of five years.
  • Temporary reassignment may be made or extended at management discretion.
  • Temporary appointment may be extended in one year increments up to a maximum of three years.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). Specialized Experience GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Scheduling safety and health inspection programs to meet regulatory requirements; 2) Reviewing equipment repairs areas to identify hazards; 3) Preparing safety policies to ensure compliance is met; and 4) Inspecting or surveying workplaces to alleviate potential safety hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
