Duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
Biological Science Technicians (Biotechs) spend time on a variety of ecology tasks, including wildlife surveys, wildlife capture and handling, vegetation/habitat surveys, invasive species management and removal, water quality monitoring and other general natural resource management activities. Data entry/data management, including use of ArcGIS, and clear written and oral communication will also be integral to this position. Isle Royale National Park is a water-based park and travel by motorboat is required to conduct fieldwork. Federal motorboat operation training is provided and required. Bio-techs are expected to work in a variety of environmental conditions; weather can vary from near-freezing temperatures with rain and snow in May to hot and humid weather in late summer. Often work occurs in remote locations in backcountry/wilderness areas of the park. Bio-techs must be in good physical condition and able to hike one-way distances of up to 12 miles over rough terrain while carrying loads of 50 pounds or more. Biting insects or other pests such as black flies, deer flies and mosquitoes are common. NOTE: Due to the need to pilot a federal motor vessel, this is a drug tested position
Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote and isolated island in northwestern Lake Superior. The park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking and more. The incumbent will be stationed on the island. Housing may be dormitory style with shared room. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on the incumbent's specific duty station on the island.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes assisting with project management of resource management projects; assisting in the development of resource management project reports, including literature search, description of methods, summary of results; entering and modifying biological data in a computer database; performing a variety of behavioral or measured data collection activities (e.g., monitoring and managing tasks related to breeding species, etc.); or utilizing various techniques to gather biological samples (e.g. plants, animals, insects, fish, etc.). You must list hours per week worked. -OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion one full year of graduate level education directly related to the work of the position to be filled such as biology, ecology, or other related sciences. This education was obtained in an accredited college or university. You must include transcripts. -OR-

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
