The position is assigned to the Air Conditioning (A/C) shop within the Maintenance Division of Facilities Engineering Service at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. The employee performs duties to carry out preventive maintenance, design, installation, modification, repair, alignment, calibration and overhaul of systems and equipment at the VA Medical Center.
Duties
Major duties listed but not limited to:
Work independently on highly complex systems of electronic sensing and control
Create or modify programming sequences and control schemes for a wide variety of equipment through a building automation computer control system (BAS)
Troubleshoot systems through computerized network, schematics, equipment manuals or various testing methods on the actual equipment
Perform the repairs and technical abilities to recommission the system or equipment prior to returning it to service
Adjust and maintain the central chilled water and steam systems that supply heating and cooling for the main hospital
Assist contractors with shutdowns and isolation of heating, cooling and interrelated systems for remodels or maintenance repairs to ensure safety and comfort of patients and ensuring equipment or systems are not damaged in the process
Train coworkers on lower level electronics or controls related repair tasks
Troubleshoot and repair of walk-in coolers and freezers, ultralow freezers and refrigerators, chilled water distribution systems, glycol direct expansion snow melt heating systems and associated pumps and motors, air conditioning systems, air handling units and building perimeter reheat systems
Provide technical expertise with logic circuits, electronic amplification and control circuits, and complex electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and/or pneumatic systems
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (work hours may be further discussed during the interview)

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic WG-11 level, your application and supporting documents must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, you must have the you have the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision in performing the full range of duties. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to: provide technical expertise with heating and air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems; interpret engineering drawings that combine electrical and electronic schematics, logic diagrams, and mechanical drawings; utilize various hand and power tools such as multi-meters, frequency counters, temperature sensors, hygrometers, anemometers; and perform preventive maintenance, installation, repair and/or overhaul of systems and complex electronics equipment.

Working Conditions: The work is primarily indoors in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated shop area or building, but at times can be subjected to working outside for several hours in inclement weather conditions. Occasionally, the incumbent is exposed to the possibility of burns, cuts, electric shock, falls from a ladder and other normal hazards associated with working around machinery and confined spaces.
