The primary purpose of this position is to perform launch, recovery duties on T-1, T-6, aircraft. Perform aircraft worker duties such as removing, inspecting, cleaning, repairing, adjusting, and installing components and parts, and to assist higher-grade aircraft mechanics in more complex tasks.
Duties
Performs Launch and Recovery functions. Performs flightline and ground handling operations. performs spotter duties and/or acts as supervisor of task while moving and positioning aircraft on flightline and into and out of hanger. Operates radios to clear aircraft movement with tower before proceeding or to comply with tower instructions during towing process.
Removes and installs major components of aircraft structure or systems and performs repairs of limited complexity to control surfaces, fairing, access panels, doors, hatches, landing gear assemblies, engines, activator units, tubing, electrical wiring, and control cables
Performs aircraft scheduled and unscheduled aircraft/system inspections (e.g., Phase 1-4, ISP, Major, Minor, hourly post flight (HPO), Preflight, Thru Flight, Basic Post Flight, Time Compliance Technical Order
Utilizes safety practices and procedures and controls tools
Accomplishes operation and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair. Establishes and maintains good working relationships

- Must have, obtain, or maintain a valid driver's license
- Must pass flightline vehicle operations test
- Must pass aircraft towing and marshalling procedures test
- Performs Foreign Object (FO) inspections and FO walks in accordance with established regulations and procedures
- May be required to obtain and maintain aircraft engine run-up certification
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours, rotating shifts, uncommon tours of duty, emergency call back, weekends, and holidays, overtime, etc.
- May be required to travel TDY as directed by management, sometimes on short notice, traveling by military or commercial aircraft, or any other designated means.
- May be required to participate in contingency situations, real world or exercise, as directed
- Cannot be colorblind to colors used for runway operations (red, green and white)
- Performs all other related duties as directed
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designation Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program
- Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security and public safety
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8852-08 AIRCRAFT WORKER position. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an Aircraft Worker without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of assigned powered and non-powered aerospace ground equipment and the skills and ability to properly and safely service aircraft.
Knowledge of the T-1, T-6, aircraft makeup, operation, installation, and adjustment of a variety of major aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies such as fuel and hydraulic systems, flight control systems, instrumentation systems, engines, landing gear assemblies, airframe, and control surfaces. Knowledge of supply procedures, the publication order system, and documentation procedures.
Aircraft ground handling knowledge to include proper-tower radio operations and procedures.
Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations, tech orders, and other guidelines. Knowledge of tool, equipment, materials accounting, and security procedures.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, make legible entries on maintenance related documents, use computer terminals to maintain records and document actions, and effectively communicate orally and legibly in writing.
Ability to maintain and perform in a fast-paced high tempo environment under noisy and sometimes very warm conditions and to work and interact with others in a business-like manner.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
