The primary purpose of this position, Engineering Technician, GS-0802-04, is to assist higher graded technicians by performing repetitive, routine tasks such as observing obvious deviations in data and ascertaining apparent cause.
Duties
-Assist engineers, scientists, and/or technicians by performing routine operations, steps and tasks related to research and development efforts.
- Visually examine materials, instruments, equipment or items for flaws or defects and correct minor flaws or bring to the attention of senior personnel.
- Apply practical, basic engineering and scientific principles and perform routine analyses of standard data and other information using standard tables and formulas.
-Use a variety of electric and manual tools.

- PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves walking, bending, and climbing associated with assisting with accomplishing assigned tasks.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the General/Specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Engineering Technical Series.
GENERAL AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT FOR GS-04: You must have six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this specialized experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-03, pay band or equivalent. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience includes technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as (a) Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes; (b) Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.
OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of 2 years of post- secondary study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of basic engineering principles.
2. Knowledge of practical engineering techniques.
3. Ability to learn new engineering principles and to apply them studies and projects.
4. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
AGE REQUIREMENT:
(1) Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, OR (2) at least 16 years of age AND (a) have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) be currently enrolled in a secondary school and work ONLY during school vacation periods.
