This position is in the Office of Research and Development, Office of Resource Management, Research Support and Compliance Division, Facilities and Research Compliance Branch. Qualifications

NOTE:  You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement. In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below: To qualify for the GS-11 level, you must have one of the following: 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level defined as preparing analyses of scientific/animal data; preparing reports and/or providing recommendations; 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree; or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position; OR equivalent combination of education and experience. To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as conducting research involving animal life sciences; analyzing research data; and preparing scientific reports. Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Ability to apply related laws, regulations and guidelines applicable to animals in research; 2) Ability to apply technical knowledge (e.g. vertebrate research, laboratory veterinary services, biological sciences) to develop methods, approaches or procedures; 3) Ability to perform program management responsibilities; 4) Skill in oral communication sufficient to provide program related guidance, advice or recommendations; 5) Skill in working with interdisciplinary teams to resolve problem and accomplish goals; 6) Ability to perform extramural management responsibilities; 7) Skill in written communication sufficient to draft compliance records, report or procedures.  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in:

Biologist:  You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.

Zoologist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in zoology, or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 20 semester hours in zoology and related animal sciences; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in zoology, or in a related discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in zoology and related animal sciences, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Animal Scientist:  You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in animal science, dairy science, poultry science; or a related discipline or field of animal science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and agricultural sciences, and 20 semester hours in animal science.

  • For animal scientist positions, at least 10 of the required 20 semester hours in animal science must have been in courses dealing with the breeding, feeding, production, and management of livestock, and the care and preparation of their products;

-OR a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in the basic biological and agricultural sciences, including a minimum of 20 semester hours in appropriate animal science subjects, as described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
