Duties

Assists in the performance of work involved in keeping engine machinery in proper operation condition. Services and adjusts gasoline or diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps, hydraulic systems, water jet propulsion, air compressors, HVAC and other machinery and equipment aboard floating plant at the Norfolk District. Assists in assessing the status of operational equipment and detection of overheating or malfunction of bearings, brakes, or clutches, leaks in piping, or other malfunctions that may develop. Operates auxiliary equipment, including pumps, generators, air compressors, and other machinery operated by electric motors or small auxiliary engines. Assists higher grade employees in making repairs to machinery by making adjustments, disassembling machinery, packing pumps, replacing worn parts, cleaning parts, etc., and assists on any emergency repairs. Operates portable electric and pneumatic tools; uses machinist hand tools, jacks, chain hoists, oxy/acetylene torch, threader, etc., and such measuring devices as calipers, rules, and gauges. Handles lines in securing vessels at repair yard docks and wharfs. Loads and unloads supplies on floating plant. Works with and assists higher graded mechanics in the repair, overhaul, and modification work of special floating plant engineering equipment powered by internal combustion engines. May be assigned to patrol boats or survey vessels as a deck hand.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent will comply with safety regulations, occupational safety and health standards, and other safety directives and orders.
  • Incumbent is enrolled in the hearing conservation program.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Position requires a pre-employment and periodic physical examination and/or evaluation under the District Medical Surveillance Program and requires the use of personal protective clothing or equipment.
  • Must be able to lift 50Lbs.
  • This position has an on-call requirement.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Screen Out Element: Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Mechanic Helper without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks including the use of test equipment and measuring devices such as levels, feeler gauges, dial indicators, micrometers, tachometers, and calipers to repair, adjust, and test shipboard equipment and machinery such as cargo handling machinery, fire fighting equipment, lifeboat davits, evaporators, catwalks, ladders, hydraulic systems, and other machine ship equipment. Assists higher graded mechanics in the repair, overhaul, and modification work of special floating plant engineering equipment powered by internal combustion engines. Physical Efforts: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hand, feet, and of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment. Working Conditions: Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noise, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine tools, and to strains from infrequent lifting or swinging of somewhat heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other equipment as required.
