Incumbent is the designated radiology technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all diagnostic radiology examinations and fluoroscopic x-ray procedures for the STVHCS.

Duties

Incumbent coordinates workflow, determining priority of examinations and ensuring workload completion. Performs a variety of radiographic examinations such as routine, difficult, and complex studies in department as well as OR and on the wards/units. Receives the patient, explains the method of procedure, ensures patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning patients for exam, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required and makes exposures necessary for the requested procedure. In performing these duties, the incumbent is responsible for the following: Performs standard radiographic examinations for diagnoses of illness and injuries. Performs procedures as defined by the equipment and scope of services, possibly including GI and small bowel series, cholecystograms, cholangiograms, urethorograms, barium and air contrast enemas, myelograms, arthrograms, venograms, DXA Scans, and contrast injections as it correlates to exam. Correlates clinical history, pertinent clinical data and other ancillary diagnostic examinations to obtain radiographic images of optimal value. Assists radiologist in fluoroscopic examinations which require incumbent to prepare and administer intravenous, oral, and/or rectal contrast media. Fluoroscopic studies such as upper GI's, barium enemas, esophagrams and small bowel follow through are performed on a digital fluoroscopy unit employing direct digital radiography. Assists in training employees and student technologist, coordinates radiation safety, receives patients and explains procedures, prepares x-ray room and equipment; performs portables, OR procedures, emergency room (Triage), and recovery room. Maintains records of patients examined, and studies performed. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate these more urgent requirements. Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, is possible. Incumbent may be required by procedure or patient's condition to monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Properly identifies patient images using left and right markers. The technologist must be certain that the patient ID band and the request are identical. Performs operator maintenance on equipment. Responsible to the radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs. Performs quality control/assurance checks on studies performed to ensure that only optimally diagnostic images are forwarded to the radiologist(s) for interpretation. Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. Technologist is responsible to perform on call duties to include after hour tours, weekends, and holidays. Is familiar with PACS, providing adequate and proper radiographs. Performs clerical duties to include, but not limited to, registering patients' examinations in VISTA, as well as file room duties such as making CD's for patients as requested and sending exams to NTP. Maintains current knowledge of the developments in the filed of allied health sciences as related to Radiologic technology and maintains current ARRT registration. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Grandfathering provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of the applicable qualification standard (12/13/2019) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). Creditable Experience: Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (clinical competencies) associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of one year of active practice, which is paid or non paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT. Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic certification requirements identified. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination. Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive one week of full- time credit for each two weeks of half-time work. Grade Determinations: GS-08: Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. (Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality in the digital system. Knowledge of different contrast material required for the requested study. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, appropriate beam limitation to anatomical area, and employing lead shielding when performing standard radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures. Employees at this grade level serve as staff DRTs at the full performance level. Candidates at this grade level must be qualified to independently provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services with only occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
