Duties

This position is located in the Water & Wastewater Treatment Unit, within the Facilities Management Division at Shenandoah National Park. The primary function of this position is to serve as a relief operator for the lead operators of the wastewater treatment plants. This position is an entry level position and does not require a wastewater license prior to hiring. The incumbent will follow the directions of the lead operator and/or the Utility Systems Repairer-Operator Supervisor. Once a wastewater license is acquired, the incumbent will be able to exercise independent judgement related to the daily operations of a wastewater treatment plant. This position will require collecting samples and processing them in a certified laboratory that is governed by a regulatory agency. Inspects, monitors, and documents the status of park septic tanks, cleans the filter screens and checks sludge depth to determine if the tank needs to be pumped. Incumbent will also have back-up responsibilities for water treatment in potable water systems throughout Shenandoah National Park. The work often requires standing, stooping, sitting, kneeling, bending, twisting, climbing, walking, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. The work is done inside and outside where dirt, spray, chemicals, fumes, and confined space conditions are present. Also required to work in adverse weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing. Will work in weather temperatures 0 to 100 degrees and other outdoor exposure includes but not limited to exposure to biting and stinging insects and other wildlife found in natural areas. Required to work Holidays and may be subject to overtime and possibly nighttime work. This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year. The typical season/work period for this position is mid-April through mid-December but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions. POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
