The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an archivist at Headquarters Air Force Command, an Air Force Major Command (MAJCOM) at home station. Responsible for performing the archival activities of the command's archives, classified and unclassified, paper, and electronic.

Performs professional archival duties. Provides research and reference services. Performs readiness requirements. Represents the organization with a variety of installation and functional area organizations.

  • This is a testing designated position IAW AFI 44-107 dated 7 Apr 2010. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.

Qualifications

Experience requirements are described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions. Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. or Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Evaluation of Experience: Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes professional knowledge of archival principles, concepts, methodology, techniques and a familiarity with the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA) standards and publications. Knowledge and general understanding of resources offered by Joint Staff, Combatant Command, Service, and other related history archives and available methods of access to these archives. Note: You must submit a copy of official transcripts. NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Professional knowledge of general archival principals and procedures including but not limited to; the arrangement, content, and servicing of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures to access them using multiple research sources, methodology, and techniques. 2. Through knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues of information classification, marking and/or release. 3. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes and other archival materials. 4. A working knowledge of protection methods used for historical documents. 5. Skill in organizing information in a logical and easily understood manner for use by researchers. 6. Ability to work with a wide variety of professional and senior personnel in areas requiring sensitivity and tact. 7. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
