About the Position: Serve as a principal safety and occupational health (SOH) manager at the Corps, Division or comparable level of an Army Command. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, administering and evaluating the organization's safety program consisting of all applicable Safety Program elements required in AR 385-10.

Duties

Participate in planning, budgeting, managing, administering, coordinating, and evaluating a comprehensive safety program that encompasses units, their subordinate elements, installations and activities. Develop loss control programs that safeguard military support for both air and ground tactical operations and associated equipment throughout the Area of Operations. Create tools, policies and guidance for integrating risk management into military processes to include developing, coordinating, and disseminating plans for the safe fielding of new equipment in advance of arrival into the unit inventory. Serve as primary technical expert and consultant for the Safety Program Participate in audits and Command Inspection Programs (CIP) evaluations of subordinate units to determine readiness and compliance with combat, combat support, and combat service support safety requirements. Serve as principal representative and advisor on safety matters with primary responsibility for formulating and promulgating safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a Career Program-12 position. Incumbent must complete all required training and achieve the CP-12 Level 1 and Explosives Safety Level 1 professional certificates within 12 months .
  • Work requires frequent onsite surveys and temporary duty at field sites with prolonged standing, walking, crawling, climbing, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching and other physical movements.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid stateside driver's license. Must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Vehicle driver's license within 30 days of employment and be able to maintain the same.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.

  • Incumbent may be required to pass a medical examination and maintain immunizations.
  • Incumbent may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and/or irregular duty hours commensurate with mission requirements.

EDUCATION: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study - safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR EXPERIENCE: experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include Managing safety or occupational health program elements. Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards. Developing or implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses. Analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards. Designing or modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards. Inspecting or surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards. Training of workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects. Work in occupational fields such as industrial hygienist, safety engineer, fire prevention engineer, health physicist, and occupational health nurse. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service which includes work that involves managing a safety and/or occupational health program, experience in working with high level managers to help reduce employee injuries and illnesses, experience in writing/reviewing policy and guidelines, and experience in developing goals for safety and/or occupational health programs or similar organizations.
