Qualifications

In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:
To qualify for the Research GS-11 level, you must have one of the following:
1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level defined as assisting laboratory research involving biochemical, cellular, molecular biology techniques; analyzing experimental endpoints; and preparing scientific reports.
master’s or equivalent graduate degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position
equivalent combination of education and experience
To qualify for the Research GS-12 level, you must have one of the following:
1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting laboratory research involving biochemical, cellular, molecular biology; analyzing research data; coordinating the operation of a research laboratory (i.e. responsibility for equipment, supplies, reagents, experimental samples, safety measures and quality assurance); and preparing scientific reports.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position
equivalent combination of education and experience
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
1) Knowledge of laboratory research principles, practices and procedures in cell culture methods, biochemical assays, DNA/RNA/Protein isolation, and other cellular biology techniques; 2) Ability to plan and implement research experiments; 3) Ability to apply the latest developments in biochemical, cellular, and molecular biology techniques to resolve problems; 4) Skill in written communication to prepare reports with findings, conclusions, and recommendations; 5) Knowledge of quality assurance procedures sufficient to perform quality assurance checks and validate methods; 6) Skill in oral communication; 7) Ability to train and mentor lower graded scientists in the scientific process; 8) Skill in contract management;

Education
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in:
Biology: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
