The purpose of this position is to serve as a Health Technician (Paramedic) in the Emergency Department and perform advanced technical health care extender functions within the emergency medical arena in response to various accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness. The incumbent of this position reports to the Supervisory Health Technician (Paramedic).
Duties
Performs Paramedic duties by identifying and treating trauma and/or medical emergencies using knowledge and skill in emergency medicine techniques.
Performs a range of diagnostic support duties using acquired knowledge of the major body systems to provide patient care and ensure appropriate patient handling.
Assists with moving, lifting, and carrying patients to emergency vehicles and appropriate treatment facility.
Performs safety and maintenance inspection on emergency and patient transport vehicles and equipment.
Independently conducts a complete assessment using advance knowledge of topographic anatomy.
Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements:
Specialized Experience:Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-5: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Takes vital signs; performs catheterizations; provides instructions to patients; assists providers in medical treatments; collects a wide variety of specimens. Or, Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Independently conducts a complete assessment, using knowledge of topographic anatomy, major body systems, emergency medicine techniques, ability to sufficiently understand the legal considerations of emergency care.
GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Identifies and treats trauma/medical emergencies using advanced knowledge and skill in emergency medicine techniques, employee identifies the signs and symptoms of life-threatening and non-life-threatening medical trauma injuries.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Must possess a current unrestricted Paramedic certification or licensure from any U.S. State.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
