Duties

Major Duties: Serve as the "alter ego" to the Center Director and provides executive leadership, direction, planning, coordination and strategic vision to the center on policies, activities and operations in the scientific management of center programs. Serve as scientific advisor to the Center Director and other senior staff on science issues in public health, medical science, epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, behavioral science and related disciplines which are frequently complex or controversial and often involving analyses and assessments resulting in policy decisions. Provide scientific guidance and leadership to international, national, state and local government agencies, scientific advice and consultation, and directs special projects involving medical, technical, and/or scientific matters of interests to NCIRD, CDC and HHS. Represent the Center with CDC leadership at all levels and with external partners to ensure that the organization is consistent with agency goals and are meeting planned accomplishments. Develop goals and objectives that integrate organizational and operations objectives for the organization. Establishes, reviews and/or revises policies, procedures, mission objectives on a wide range of scientific, environmental, health and emergency response.

Qualifications

Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level to be considered for this position. Basic Qualifications for RF-0602: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience. Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include providing leadership in developing and executing a national program to prevent, detect and respond to viral enteric infections, viral vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, and outbreaks of unknown origin in the United States and abroad. Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit transcripts or a list of applicable courses with their application package.   • the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs
