Duties

Serves as a technical expert for the collection, analysis, and reporting of resource data for the qualitative and quantitative inventory and monitoring of vegetation, soil, and water resources and the associated wildlife habitat. Applies knowledge of ecological principles and applications in statistics to terrestrial and aquatic inventory, assessment and monitoring practices in order to assist with interpretation of the measures of upland and riparian vegetation. Plans and designs range improvements and vegetation treatments that meet program goals and multiple-use constraints and objectives; designs and implements vegetative management plans to meet land use plan objectives for complex ecosystems. Integrates and coordinates with other associated resource programs, such as soil/water/air, hydrology, range, wildlife, lands, minerals, fire, and vegetation management (e.g. fuels and invasive species). Provides input to interdisciplinary reports, environmental assessments, and protective stipulations for rangeland and grass-like ecosystems.

Basic Requirements Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. or Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. For GS-05: Applicants who meet the basic education requirements described above are fully qualified for the GS-05 level. For GS-07: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Providing technical expertise with emphasis in vegetation and or wildlife and or range, and or soil science; assisting in program development and implementation of a natural resource, wildlife, botany, soils, or range management program; and addressing issues related to range management; addressing plant, soils, and habitat issues. OR Education: 1 year of graduate-level education OR superior academic achievement OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. For GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Collecting and analyzing data for studies of plant, soils, range, and or wildlife communities; assisting in program development and implementation of a natural resource, wildlife, botany, soils, or range management program; and addressing issues related to range management; addressing plant, soils, and habitat issues; and providing guidance to others on technical aspects of work. OR Education: 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work requires the incumbent to spend time performing both office and field work. The office work is primarily sedentary and may require walking, standing, and carrying light items, such as books, small instruments or samples, and other similar materials. While at the field office, the incumbent may occasionally lift materials such as fence posts, barbed wire, and seed bags, etc., requiring lifting of loads up to 50 pounds. Field duties involve long hours of driving, hiking, climbing, and other forms of outdoor physical activities in remote locations. Occasional project construction work may be physically demanding, such as building or removing fences, constructing wildlife guzzlers, developing springs, etc. The incumbent is expected to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in remote areas in complicated terrain. Other modes of transportation such as off highway vehicles may occasionally be used. Work Environment: The work environment varies from an office setting where the incumbent has regular contact with work associates to a field setting where the incumbent is working alone for extended periods of time in remote situations. Field work will involve outdoor exposure, including some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife and physical hazards.
