The Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) is in the Office of Research and Development of the Columbia VA Healthcare System (CVAHCS) serving as the Attending Veterinarian with oversight and direction of the Animal care and Use Program (ACUP).
Duties
Major duties include but not limited to:
Significant experience with biomedical science programs.
Significant coordination and collaboration with the university affiliate animal care and use program.
Providing medical and surgical care for the large number of animal subjects required for the multidisciplinary program of medical research and education.
Provides essential professional and technical support to the development and conduct of multidisciplinary investigations requiring the use of animal subjects as an integral part of the biomedical sciences.
Consultation, guidance, and advice on the comparative biology and medical, technology, husbandry, medical and surgical care and the selection, procurements, preparation, and use of laboratory animals.
Engage in such medical programs as cancer, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, infectious disease, neurologic and mental diseases, immunologic responses, dietary problems, physiologic and pathologic processes in aging, pharmacology and evaluation of drugs and new surgical procedures, etc.
Participates in meetings, conferences, seminars, and workshops at the affiliate university, other government agencies, research and development corporations, and scientific institutio1ts to facilitate an exchange of information.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/19/2024.
Basic Requirements:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accredited body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-14 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-13. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-13 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Obtaining funding for clinical science research and development, developing program goals and suitable organizational structure for support of research projects, managing project funds and the personnel supported by funds, independently plan, organize and execute programs. .

Preferred Experience: Research experience and VA and/or NIH funding for aging-related research
Physical Requirements: This position requires working at a desk, computer terminal and laboratory setting involving standing, bending, walking, sitting, reading, writing, carry light loads of materials (under 15 pounds), and frequent use of both hands.
