About the Position: Typical work shift: 0700-1530, M-F, with a 30-minute lunch. May be required to work overtime to meet mission requirements. Rotates to a set of duties in pre-op, post-op, charge nurse duties, procedure rooms, including moderate sedation administration and instruments handling. In addition, rotates to GI clinic to assist with patient procedure education and scheduling.

Duties
Provide and oversee direct patient nursing care in pre, intra, and post procedure setting.
Utilize advanced assessment skills to identify patient care problems, formulate plans to meet patient care needs and continually revise goals and objectives according to changes in patient status.
Assist the physician during gastroenterological diagnostic and interventional procedures with instruments, equipment and accessories.
Administer rapidly-acting medications, including sedation medications, administer oxygen therapy, utilize airway care techniques, and operate and monitor cardiac monitoring equipment, monitor vital signs, including pain level, assess Aldrete scores.
Initiate a higher level of response to emergencies, initiating emergency response protocols.
Provide post anesthesia monitoring to patients who have received moderate, deep sedation or general anesthesia; making sure that patients meet criteria for discharge.
Provide patient post-procedure education and information for follow-up.
Perform point of care pregnancy and glucose testing.
Rotate to Charge Nurse duties. Plan, delegate and direct nursing care based on patient care requirements and staff skill levels.
Promote better health practices, consult, precepts and advise other nurses who provide direct care.
Prolonged periods of walking and standing are required, as well as ability to lift, bend, and stoop, work in dark rooms.
Requirements
- This is an Inclement Weather Essential position. The incumbent is expected to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during inclement weather conditions.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) is preferred, but not required on hiring. Selected candidate will be required to complete ALS certification and moderate sedation administration certification during orientation.
- Ability to wear N95 or PAPR for aerosol generating procedures, as per infection control protocols, is required.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical/Sub-Specialty):
Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
Foreign Degree: Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools Certification Program. The certification program consists of a credentials evaluation, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam, and evidence of passing one of the approved English Language Proficiency examinations. A copy of the CGFNS Certificate is required.
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes performing patient assessments (including close monitoring of patients coming out sedation/anesthesia); administering medications as per scope of registered nursing practice; providing post anesthesia care to patients receiving moderation sedation and general anesthesia; providing patient education. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
