THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.
This National Guard position is for a MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR, Position Description Number D0843000 and is part of the KS Maneuver And Training Equipment Site, National Guard.
Duties
As a MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR, WG-5703-08, you will operate primarily straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 32,000 pounds and/or truck tractors with semitrailers or full trailers to transport personnel or pick up and deliver supplies, materials or equipment. Incumbent couples and uncouples the truck tractor and semitrailer or truck and trailer, and connects and disconnects the air brakes and electrical lines. Incumbent maneuvers vehicles within close tolerances when driving and backing over uneven ground, in narrow or congested areas, between buildings and other vehicles, between parked aircraft and when positioning vehicles at loading docks. Driver operates vehicles on interstate highways, winding roads, and steep grades and manipulates the dual braking system to prevent the semitrailer or trailer from jackknifing. Assures cargo is properly loaded, distributed and secured. Performs operator maintenance on vehicles. Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: This position works on a 4/10's compressed work schedule with four 10-hour days, Tuesday-Friday each week of the pay period. Work schedule is subject to change based on mission requirements
Requirements
- This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
- Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
- Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
- Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
- May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
- Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
- Must possess a valid Kansas State driver's license prior to appointment
- Must be able to obtain a Secret clearance within a year of appointment
- May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
- Must be a member of the Kansas Army National Guard

Military Grades: E1 through E7
Compatible Military Assignments: immaterial
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have the experience in operating and performing operator maintenance on straight-in-line trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 14,400 kilograms (32,000 pounds) and operate truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers, and motor coaches.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: The knowledge of using correct turning radius for these flection-type vehicles; back the trailer into loading docks, between other trailers, and in narrow, congested locations around warehouses and parking areas; and apply the dual braking system for the combination vehicles especially on steep winding grades, without causing the trailers to jackknife.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Performs work on hard surfaces in work areas that require the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items that weigh up to 70 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent is required to work inside and outside and is exposed to all to all types of weather and traffic conditions. The incumbent is exposed to the possibility of serious injury from traffic accidents or while handling heavy equipment and supplies.
