This position is located at the Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, New York.
Duties
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles.
The Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer is responsible for the servicing and repairing of heavy mobile equipment such as backhoes, tractors and excavators. It also includes the servicing and repairing of automotive and grounds maintenance equipment. The work includes, but is not limited to, repairing tires, lubricating vehicles and equipment according to specifications, as well as the inspecting and testing of vehicles and equipment to ensure safety of operation. Incumbent may use test equipment and applicable technical manuals to perform trouble shooting of problems. The incumbent will perform minor repairs without supervision and major repairs with limited supervision. The incumbent must maintain vehicle records, equipment mileage or hours and fuels records.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,03/21/2024.
Your background must demonstrate work involved in making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components; or assisting higher level heavy mobile equipment mechanics in disassembling, repairing, and assembling major systems, components, and operating mechanisms.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Requires moderate to heavy lifting in moving and raising objects up to as much as 80 pounds. Necessitates working in strained and uncomfortable positions frequently. Work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and crouching. Work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Perform strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Working Conditions: Working indoor most of the time, but occasionally in maintenance yard or field. ls exposed to dirt, grease, grime, noise and fumes. Frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, dust, grease, heat, fumes, and noise. Works in bad weather, in mud or snow and in wet or icy areas. Subject to cuts, burns. chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats and hard toed shoes.
