This position supports the care of our Veteran population through the provision of all aspects of dental laboratory support in the areas of Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as General Dentistry at the VA Medical Center in Canandaigua, NY.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include but may not be limited to: Fabricates/ Constructs Dentures: Relines repairs or duplicates removable dentures. Utilizes CAD/CAM techniques involved with removable and fixed prostheses. Constructs custom trays, registration bases, and occlusion rims. Mounts casts on indicated articulator. Selects and sets up artificial teeth. Mixes, packs acrylic, and utilizes the Heat Injection technique to fabricate dentures, as required. Finishes and polishes dentures. Prepares/Fabricates Crown and Bridge Casework: Checks and boxes the impression; mixing and pouring the material from which the die is to be made; and processing the poured impression using the materials and sequence of techniques appropriate to the type of die being constructed. Designs, mills, polishes and fires prepared and scanned CAD/CAM images. Scans images to be imported into software to be sent to the VA Central Dental Laboratory (CDL). Anatomical and functional wax patterns are developed for gold crowns and other castings. Fabricates/ Constructs Special Dental Appliances: Fabricates orthodontic appliances, and maxillary/mandibular splints. Fabricates special appliances for implant prosthodontics as well as surgical splints and TMJ devices. Constructs stents and splints of various materials and designs. Processes Prescriptions and Maintains Inventory of Working Supplies and Equipment: Requests supplies on a timely basis through communication and support from the LeadDental Assistant. Maintains records and statistics as required for the laboratory and is accountable for the security of prosthodontic teeth, gold and other precious metals used in the laboratory. Receives, interprets, and processes prescriptions. Controls shipments and interprets the dentist's prescription for full and partial dentures including cases involving abnormalities and conditions that present particular problems in retaining the denture or improving or restoring mastication or other mouth functions. To qualify for this position, you must meet the following: English Language Proficiency - In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. In addition to the English Language Proficiency Requirement, to qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specific qualifying specialized experience for this position includes using dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; using laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; using precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. (Resume must demonstrate the required experience. We will not make assumptions.) -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed 1.5 years of graduate education directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Laboratory Technician. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study. (Education will not be credited unless transcripts are included with your application package) -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Requires equivalent combinations of experience and education as described above to fully meet the requirements of this position. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light dental items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity; and color acuity.
