Duties

As specifically instructed, collects and records data in range studies such as condition and trend reasons for use, utilization, actual use, and climatological data. Serves as a team member for range inventory efforts such as mapping which entails collecting, compiling, and recording vegetation data on each site write-up area. Collects, compiles, and records water sources data (wells, pipelines, reservoirs, etc.) and boundary lines (allotments, fences, natural barriers, etc.) for range inventory mapping efforts. Makes vegetation counts on small plots to determine such information as survival of seedlings, species, distribution of plants, volume of growth, etc. Under close supervision, performs routine and recurring weed management activities for the respective organization in strict adherence to established practices and prescribed procedures. Operates, maintains, and inventories weed management equipment (tools, monitoring/mapping equipment, pesticide applicators, etc.). Under the close supervision of a higher-level technician or specialist, safely mixes, maintains, and calibrates herbicides and pesticides for use in rangeland environments.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-4: 6 months of general and 6 months of specialized work experience. Examples of specialized experience may include surveying public lands for the presence of noxious weeds; locating and treating weeds with designated herbicides; and preparing accurate records of all treatment; OR Successful completion of two years (90 quarter or 60 semester hours) of study above high school that included 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in math is creditable. Transcripts must be provided. OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. Transcripts must be provided. GS-05: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting weed treatments under the supervision of another licensed pesticide applicator, assists with inventory and monitoring weed infestations, maintaining spraying equipment, and responsible for complying with proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses shown below: Forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. Transcripts must be provided. OR Combination of Education and Experience: combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience that total 100%. Transcripts must be provided. GS-06:You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting weed treatments under the supervision of another licensed pesticide applicator, assists with inventory and monitoring weed infestations, maintaining spraying equipment, and responsible for complying with proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides. OR Successful completion one year of graduate education (18 semester hours) in a field that is directly related to the work of this position. Transcripts must be provided. OR Combination of Education and Experience: combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience that total 100%. Transcripts must be provided. GS-07:You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting weed treatments under the supervision of another licensed pesticide applicator, assists with inventory and monitoring weed infestations, maintaining spraying equipment, and responsible for complying with proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides. OR Successful completion one year of graduate education (18 semester hours) in a field that is directly related to the work of this position. Transcripts must be provided. OR Combination of Education and Experience: combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience that total 100%. Transcripts must be provided. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending; walking or climbing over rocky areas, through dense vegetation, and in mountainous terrain. The incumbent must be in good physical condition, be able to lift heavy objects, and perform strenuous physical activity for prolonged periods of time. The incumbent may be required to carry up to 45 pounds on his/her back over uneven terrain. Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety policies and procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
