This position is part of the Facilities Management, Government Publishing Office in Washington,
District of Columbia.
Duties
Provides guidance and direction to accomplish work involving assembly installation, maintenance and repair of all types of machinery.
Leads other employees in assembling, installing, maintaining and repairing press and bindery equipment, industrial trucks and HVAC machinery.
Manufactures, repairs, and rebuilds parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloys such as stainless-steel alloys, aluminum, titanium, magnesium
and other materials such as rubber, plastics, and nylon through the use of conventional or computernumerical control (CNC) machine tools and precision handwork.
Distributes daily work assignments and validates Machinists work and maintenance when completed.
Performs risk analysis to determine if the assigned task can be performed safely and to standards.
Requirements
- You must be a current Career or Career Conditional GPO employee to apply.
- Selectee may be required to pass pre-employment requirements prior to appointment.
- Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain Suitability/Non Sensitive Low Risk security clearance.
- Physical - Effort: Must be able to pick up objects weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing up to 45 pounds for considerable distances.
- Physical - Effort: Must be able to push, pull, walk, reach, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
- Working Conditions: Duties are performed in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area.
- Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to moving machinery and sharp edges and may suffer cuts, bruises, and abrasions. Personal Protective Equipment such as gloves, safety shoes, hearing protection, and safety glasses are required
- A one-year Probationary period may be required.

Qualifications
To qualify for the MACHINIST LEADER, KJ - 3414 - 00 , you must meet the following requirements:
Applicants must meet the following SCREEN OUT ELEMENT/JOB ELEMENT #73 ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE as a Machinist Leader below, to be considered eligible for this position. Applicants must have the experience and/or training of a sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Machinist Leader.
These duties include are:
1) Possessing experience programming 1) possessing experience programming CNC machining equipment to manufacture parts using programming software such as auto cad, and inventor software; 2) planning and laying out work from blueprints, worksheet and drawings which may have missing or incorrect information, and 3) Determining work procedures, machine, tools, equipment and attachments to be used, use of machine tools, such as vertical and horizontal mills.
In addition to the requirements above, GPO employees competing under merit promotion procedures must meet all of the following criteria in accordance with Federal Merit Promotion Plan, GPO Instruction 615.2C (Appendix B): 1. Have completed a formal, recognized apprenticeship or GPO journeyperson training program, or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the trade of the vacancy; AND 2. Have at least 1 year of journeyperson experience subsequent to completion of the above apprenticeship or training; AND 3. Have served a minimum of 1 year in Career or Career-Conditional appointment in the GPO.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.
