Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for approximately 10 1/2 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year (approximately mid-December to the end of January). Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Major Duties: The incumbent is expected to plan, develop, organize, and lead curriculum-based education programs and activities. Serves as a program lead for the day-to-day operation of the park's Education and Community Outreach Program. Assists with the reservation process for groups requests and works with a team to assist with these groups. Programs and activities involve all ages, ethnicities, and persons with special physical and cognitive needs. The position research, plans, and develops educational and interpretive materials and media. These materials are standards-based, park specific, theme related, and multidisciplinary. Assists with conducting teacher workshops or seminars and other education-related conferences. Leads individual activities and sessions during such workshops and seminars. Develop and present a wide variety of formal and informal interpretive experiences using a variety of fully developed interpretive skills. Additional frontline responsibilities may include performing roving assignments, providing orientation and information at contact stations, and completing assigned tasks and projects that support Interpretation & Visitor Services operations. Work collaboratively within a team environment for cross-operational coordination, unified messaging, internal communication, and quality control. Physical Demands: Work responsibilities require occasional heavy lifting in excess of 40 lbs., strenuous periods of walking, long periods of standing or sitting, and working in sometimes harsh weather conditions. Because the position works extensively with children outdoors and sometimes in remote locations, Basic First-Aid and CPR certification training will be provided. Work Environment: Work is performed both outdoors and indoors. Conditions may include severe weather: cold, heat, wind, lightning, snow, and rain. Temperatures may range from 90F to 0F, at elevations ranging from 6,000 to 9,000 feet. Position requires driving a government vehicle to various sites within the park and travel to neighboring communities. A valid Driver's License is required. Area Information: Located in Southwest Colorado, Mesa Verde National Parkwas established in 1906 to preserve and interpret the archaeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people. For over 700 years, the Ancestral Pueblo people built thriving communities on the mesas and in the cliffs of Mesa Verde. Today, the park protects the rich cultural heritage of 26 Pueblos and Tribes and offers visitors a spectacular window into the past while also highlighting contemporary connections. This World Heritage Site and International Dark Sky Park is home to over a thousand species, including several that live nowhere else on earth. Nearby Yucca House National Monument is managed under Mesa Verde. It is an undeveloped NPS unit and protects a large unexcavated valley pueblo. On average Mesa Verde hosts 500,000+ visitors per year. Area residents and visitors enjoy world-class outdoor recreational opportunities including skiing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting, camping, hunting, and fishing in the region. Nearby public lands include the San Juan National Forest, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument and other areas in the Tres Rios District of the Bureau of Land Management. The local towns of Cortez, Mancos, Dolores, and Durango provide a range of housing, dining, and shopping opportunities, and both Durango and Cortez have regional airports. In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Park guide or tour leader; environmental educator, teacher or naturalist; or other similar work REQUIRING skill in working with audiences of diverse backgrounds, ages and group sizes and knowledge of topics related to cultural history, natural history, biological/physical sciences, natural resources, or other disciplines related to resource-based education. You must include hours per week worked for each position held on your resume. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Assistant lead park guide or tour leader; assistant lead environmental educator, teacher or naturalist; or other similar work REQUIRING skill in working with audiences of diverse backgrounds, ages, and group sizes and knowledge of topics related to cultural history, natural history, biological/physical sciences, natural resources, related fields, or other disciplines related to resource-based education AND experience with conducting formal coaching and auditing of educational or curriculum-based programs, as well as developing and providing training, direction, and/or job orientation to coworkers or volunteers. You must include hours per week worked for each position held on your resume. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
