Duties

Leads a team of trades and/or labor workers. Performs nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the work crew led. Reviews section work orders and drawings to determine materials and equipment needed to accomplish shop work orders. Acts as shop primary technical expert and point of contact for authorizing field changes to work plans and determines technical viability of work plan changes in scope, nature, and resource requirements. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and maintains tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • This position may require drug testing and the candidate may be subject to passing a drug test upon selection.
  • The work will require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. A valid driver's license is required for the position.
  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required
  • This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
  • May be required to train and/or guide lower grade employees.
  • Heavy physical effort is required by constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs. Possible exposure to injury, noise, and vibration is increased when working around larger and more complicated equipment
  • The employee works both inside and outside in all kinds of weather, frequently exposed to dust and dirt. Works near moving parts of equipment and machinery.
  • Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, heat, fumes, torches, vibrations, ultraviolet radiation, falling material, or injury from equipment.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the Federal Wage System Job Grading Standard for Maintenance Mechanic, 4700. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Working knowledge of a wide range of principles, processes, and techniques of trade(s) and/or craft(s) 2. Knowledge of safety, environmental and occupational health principles, practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and current legislative issues as they relate to the requirements of the position. 3. Knowledge of technical practices and ability to read and interpret instructions, blue prints, sketches, drawings, and technical manuals in order to plan, lay out, and build a wide variety of facility and infrastructure maintenance, repair, and construction projects. 4. Knowledge of the use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and equipment common to trades and labor work performed by the group being led. 5. Knowledge of current automation technology and practices essential for the accomplishment of Tririga, AMP, Builder and preventive maintenance programs. 6. Skill in performing the trade and /or labor work of the group being led. 7. Ability to concisely communicate instructions, guidance both orally and in writing. 8. Knowledge of advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute layout more complex and exact projects; and of regulations, procedures and policies relayed to maintenance and documentation. 9. Ability to lead a team of three or more labor or trade employees. 10. Ability to plan and organize work assignments to include determining resources required to accomplish mission. Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required by constantly reaching, bending, turning and moving hands, arms, feet and legs. Climbing up and down ladders and scaffolds, working in cramped or awkward conditions while installing items; and reaching and bending while using hand and powered tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The employee frequently lifts, carries and handles items weighting up to 40 pounds. In addition, work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy items using hoists, holders and pulleys, lifting devises or other workers, as required. Working Conditions: Theemployee works both inside in all kinds of weather, frequently exposed to dust and dirt. Works near moving parts of equipment and machinery. Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises, falls, heat, fumes, torches, vibrations, ultraviolet radiation, falling material, or injury from equipment. May be exposed to grease, fumes, solvents, high noise, vibrations and exposure to critical injuries. The exposure to injury, noise, and vibration is increased when working around larger and more complicated equipment in more difficult circumstances. Will be required to wear protective clothing such as hard hats, hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, gloves, masks and aprons. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
