You will serve as a ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (MECHANICAL) in the Technical Services Division, Audit Branch of SUPERVISOR OF SHIPBUILDING GROTON. You will serve as a Mechanical Engineering Technician for the design, construction, overhaul, and repair of nuclear-powered submarine mechanical systems, and equipment.

Duties

You will confer with representatives of NAVSEA, ship's force, project officers, Navy maintenance activities, the contractor or subcontractor relative to the operation, design, and arrangement of cognizant items. You will recommend improvements in design and operation of methods to be used in fabrication. You will witness and obtain data on special tests and review shipboard test forms for tests and inspections required by contract specifications. You will assume responsibilities as Acting Point of Contact (POC) in accordance with the "Acting POC" schedule and assists in training new employees, during the absence of the branch head. You will provide technical advice to other personnel on possible approaches to the solution of problems and review of technical documents. You will serve as the SUPSHIP technical representative on teams with the contractor, and facilitate the identification and mitigation of design, construction, and program process risks. You will cross-trains with other individuals in the Code to help with backlog, work overflow or stand-in for other group engineers as the situation arises. You will review, analyze, research, prepare correspondence, recommend corrective action, consult with the contractor, and participate in conferences pertaining to design, manufacturing, and installation deficiencies and waterfront problems. You will determine technical adequacy of engineering recommendations as reflected in documents such as test forms, design audits, engineering reports, vendor information requests, instruction books, and deviation requests. You will act as a consultant, providing recommendations and aid in the form of technical comments and conference representation for the branch supervisor.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-11) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: providing technical engineering support in the design, testing, or repair of naval submarine mechanical systems to ensure fleet readiness.
