Duties
Provide technical assistance, administrative assistance, oversight and coordination of the grossing and autopsy subsections of the Anatomic Pathology Service.
Instruct pathology residents, interns, and medical students in the procedures and techniques used to examine, describe and dissect organs and tissues removed during surgery and at autopsy.
Maintain up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Anatomic Pathology Service and assist in the development, revision, and integration of all SOPs for all sections for the Anatomic Pathology Service.
Monitor the quality of laboratory services and patient care pertaining to specimen receipt, accessioning, grossing, tissue harvesting, storage and disposal.
Oversee work in the accessioning, grossing and autopsy suites to assure proper processing of tissue specimens, especially those requiring special handling (e.g., electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, special histologic techniques).
Requirements

- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).

Basic Requirement for Anatomic Pathology Specialist:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes serving as a Pathologist's Assistant for an Anatomical Pathology laboratory performing duties such as accessioning, dissection, and describing gross anatomic features of human tissue surgical specimens for histological processing and/or performing autopsies; performing gross analysis of anatomic pathology specimens (which may include biopsies and small resections to larger, complex cancer cases); and facilitating training/didactic instruction regarding gross analysis of anatomic pathology specimens. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
