Duties

Serve as initial contact to answer general and technical questions regarding varied public land laws, regulations, policies, and the status of lands and minerals. Locate, interpret, and explain current land status to the public; and to generate electronic reports to answer public inquiries. Assists customers by researching and copying case file folders, including master title plats, historical indexes, survey records, and patents. Provides legal copies of official records and documents as requested. Prepares letters, memos, reports in final form, and makes entries into automated systems. Serves as contact to the public by telephone and in person. Possesses written and oral communication skills to answer public inquiries. Provides specific directions to customers on filing requirements, including date and eligibility requirements, for various land and mineral uses. Reviews initial documents being filed for adherence to the filing requirements, examines the appropriate land status records to determine allowable uses, and assists with processing of payments and filing of legal documents. Performs general office clerical work as assigned.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: To qualify for the GS-5, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4. Examples of specialized experience may include: Providing customer service to the public face to face, over the telephone, and/or in writing. Performing administrative and technical procedures using a computer to locate and review records and reconcile discrepancies. Applying laws, rules or regulations and written guidelines. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study in any field OR A combination of education and specialized experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. To qualify for the GS-6, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5. Examples of specialized experience may include: Providing customer service to the public face to face, over the telephone, and/or in writing to provide information, assistance, or instructions. Performing administrative and technical procedures using a computer to locate and review records and reconcile discrepancies. Conducting research necessary to respond to written or in-person inquiries. Ability to read and abstract information from a wide variety of legal documents. Writing correspondence in response to inquiries and drafting a variety of other written products. To qualify for the GS-7, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6. Examples of specialized experience may include: Independently providing customer service to the public face to face, over the telephone, and/or in writing. Timekeeping/attendance experience mostly independent with some analysis work, and land status queries. Researching legal documents and preparing written responses related to land, mineral, mining claim recordation and recreation inquiries. Negotiating with others to resolve issues. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work involves sitting and standing, typically in a public room environment. Moderate lifting of plats and public information documents may be required. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office building that requires normal safety precautions.
