This position is located in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS), Infrastructure Management Division (IMD), Environmental Compliance and Sustainability Branch (ECBS). The incumbent manages the operations of the ECB and supervises its multidisciplinary staff which is responsible for complex planning, programming, auditing, and monitoring Service facilities or environmental compliance and management.

Duties

As a Environmental Protection Specialist your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Provides expert technical assistance to Regional and field station personnel regarding complex industrial and domestic waste and pollution problems involving multimedia environmental concerns to ensure environmental compliance. Recommends actions required to abate violations and achieve or improve environmental performance that may require the use of newly developed processes and/or technologies. Independently conducts field station environmental compliance audits. Prepares, consolidates, reviews, and completes environmental compliance audit reports. Assists project engineers with environmental compliance program requirements such as Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure plans, and Lead Based Paint, Asbestos, and Radon Surveys. Oversees the conduct of remedial investigations or similar studies to determine the nature and extent of contamination and gathers all data necessary to support a feasibility study. Identifies potential environmental liability issues and provides written documentation of findings to management.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 03/15/2024 will be considered. Minimum Qualification GS-13 One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level performing the following: mastery of environmental compliance concepts, principles, and practices used to resolve pollution problems associated with solid and hazardous waste operations, domestic and industrial waste water disposal and water supply operations, solid and hazardous materials and waste operations, air pollution parameters, asbestos, lead, pesticides and other contaminants and their associated environmental liabilities; and independently can conduct environmental compliance audits. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time In Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet both eligibility and qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the JOA. Specifically, i.
