The Pathology Specialist manages the operations of the West Palm Beach Surgical Pathology and Autopsy Services. The employee represents these services in a variety of interactions with clinical physicians and residents, nursing personnel, hospital administrative and other personnel, and personnel from outside facilities.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major Duties: Responsible for managing all daily Surgical Pathology functions, working independently to perform these highly complex functions, or in collaboration with one or more pathology resident(s), medical student(s), technician(s), and technologist(s); Understands of the gross appearance of pathologic processes in a wide variety of patient samples allows him/her to comfortably adapt traditional methods to handle unique cases containing unknown abnormalities; The accuracy of the services rendered is expected to be high given the incumbent's extensive training and expertise. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following: Elements of gross examination and sectioning of all types of surgical pathology specimens; Provides photography of gross specimens (non-formalin-fixed) and maintenance of a teaching collection of gross photographs and collaboration with pathologists regarding unusual findings during the macroscopic examination and dissection; Investigation and resolution of problems related to Surgical Pathology and evaluating and implementing new equipment and ordering supplies and assistance with accessioning, embedding, cutting, staining, and labeling of routine histology as needed; Plays a central role in the education and training of residents in other medical specialties, and medical students, regarding the practice of Surgical Pathology and Autopsy; Maintains teaching files of interesting cases for study by residents, pathologists, and medical students, and for use in conferences and continuing medical education endeavors; Develops or participates in the development of Anatomic Pathology protocols and evaluates new procedures for incorporation into the lab and assesses the effectiveness of the procedures once in place; Performs all duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 1:00pm - 4:30pm. NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized. BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or higher degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences, or allied sciences that is appropriate to the work of this position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Transcripts required. AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-12: At least one full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: performing gross anatomy and recognizing pathologic abnormalities in a wide variety of gross specimens; performing gross examination and sectioning procedures to adapt procedures and best illustrate the pathologic processes; performing permanent and frozen section techniques and standard histochemical stains; and interpreting specialized tests and laboratory findings. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires long period of standing while performing gross examinations and teaching others to do so, recurring bending over when performing frozen sections and autopsies, occasional lifting of heavy items (bodies), and above average dexterity in dissecting specimens and cutting frozen sections.
