About the Position: This is a PERMANENT position as a Geographer (GIS Specialist) with the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Jackson, S.C. Situational Telework Only, Including emergency and OPM prescribed unscheduled telework.

Duties

Serves as the senior specialist on Global Positioning System (GPS) surveying and as the primary point of contact and coordination on all matters related to Mapping/Surveying. Analyze the GIS requirements and develops applicable procedures, specifications, guides, and standards; provides technical control, quality assurance, and oversight of GIS products. Acquires and maintains familiarity with Aeronautical Reconnaissance Coverage Geographic Information System (ArcGIS), Server Enterprise Configuration and tuning for Structured Query Language (SQL) servers. Responsible for designing, coding, and maintaining: Media Repository; Integrated Facilities System (IFS) custom queries; and Quality Assurance Surveillance Program (QASP) data collection application. Coordinate GIS requirements with manufacturers' representatives, contract Architect-Engineer (A-E) firms, project engineers, and others involved in projects. Acquire spatial data via the Global Positioning System (GPS) field-mapping or via third-party delivery; distributes and transfers data to third-party formats; integrates contractor provided data with the Fort Jackson GIS. Updates and maintains installation maps, gathering data from surveys, both visual and physical, and real property data in the GIS

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing geographic data software programs such as Aeronautical Reconnaissance Coverage Geographic Information System (ArcGIS); developing various procedures, specifications, guides and standards for data software programs; generating detailed thematic maps; maintaining and analyzing data from surveys and real property data; providing technical support for Geographic Information Systems (GIS); designing, coding, maintaining Media Repository. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: GeographyOral CommunicationSpatial Orientation Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
