This Engineering Equipment Operator Leader position is in Facility Management at the VA Maine Healthcare System located at the Togus location. This position is full time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
This Engineering Equipment Operator Leader position performs as a Work Leader for the Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic, Gardener and Laborer employees and compensated work therapy workers in the day-to-day operations for the department. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Operates a wide variety of VA owned heavy and light mobile equipment such as a 924G Front End Loader, 930G Front End Loader, 120M Grader, 6400 John Deere Tractor, 410 John Deere Backhoe, 4060 Kubota Tractor, 3060 Kubota Tractor, 226B Skid Steer Cat, 72" Zero Turns Mowers JD, Forklifts, 60 Feet Manlift, UTV Kubota's, John Deere Gators, Dump Truck, Trash Truck, Box Truck.
Perform minor repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components, ex, wiper blades, mower belts, tire replacements, blade changes, putting plows on equipment, etc.
Operate the above vehicles which have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. Some vehicles are equipped with air brakes. Vehicles are operated over uneven terrain, over improved/unimproved roads.
Perform as a Lead for the Grounds Department and will assist with the operations of the Grounds Department.
Responsible to ensure that all Grounds staff are trained on all equipment that they use in day-to day operations.
Relay instructions from the supervisor to all staff and assign tasks as appropriate and ensure that instructions are understood and will report back to the supervisor when tasks are complete.
Perform temporary supervisory responsibilities as assigned during those periods when the Engineering Equipment Operator Foreman is not present, available, or on duty.
Perform lawn care and snow removal as required.
Work along with other workers and set the pace, demonstrating proper work methods to achieve the assignment in a safe and efficient manner.
Operate all facility owned or rental equipment to perform such functions as cutting, moving, digging, grading, and rolling earth, sand, stone, snow, and other materials.

Qualifications

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: This position requires moderate to heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate different controls on various types of equipment. Work requires frequent bending stooping, kneeling, walking and exposure to constant vibrations and jolting caused by movement of equipment over uneven and rough terrain and running of other power tools. Position may require lifting and moving weight exceeding 50 pounds with or without assistance The employee will frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. The incumbent is sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Incumbent will exert moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads.
Working Conditions: This position is a working leader that leads Grounds staff under his/her control as well as performs Grounds duties when not leading or operating equipment. Must be able to work under pressure and exercise flexibility in changing one type of work to another with only short notice to meet emergencies and deadlines without undue interruption of routine. Obtaining needed information from the Supervisor to be able to change projects requested of the facility by maintaining sufficient amounts of materials in stock. Incumbent may be required to work any established tour of duty as deemed necessary for the function of the operation. The incumbent is subject to call back during operation. The incumbent will work both inside and outside. When inside, the incumbent is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. Employee may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85dBA for up to eight (8) hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. Wearing of hearing protection that will contain the noise level of 85dBA or below is mandatory while operating equipment. While wearing hearing protection devices, the employee must still be able to hear at a level to perform duties in a safe manner. When outside the incumbent will work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes.
