This position is part of the Office of Environmental Management - Carlsbad Field Office, Department of Energy. As a Industrial Hygienist, you will serve as a recognized subject matter expert providing technical support for the review and approval of contractor prepared occupational safety and health documentation, assuring occupational health hazards are recognized and proposed controls are adequate to mitigate the hazards.

Duties

As a Industrial Hygienist, you will: Serve as a senior Industrial Hygienist responsible for providing professional as well as technical direction, guidance, and advice on various industrial hygiene program areas for the Department of Energy. Analyze and evaluate worker safety health plans for Department activities, facilities, and sites as well as contractor programs in the Industrial Hygiene and industrial safety area. Plan and develop performance baseline requirements for contractor performance relevant to Industrial Hygiene programs. Prepare technical papers, reports, and briefings in the areas of Industrial Hygiene for the purpose of providing information and advice to management and program offices. May represent DOE on program development, establishment of standards and guides, and in reaching agreement with other agencies on program direction. Assist in planning and developing on-going and continual education programs for IH professionals throughout the organization, keeping IH programs and professionals abreast of new and changing techniques, tactics, practices, procedures, rules, and laws regarding IH.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT: You must meet one of the following basic requirements below to be eligible for the GS-0690, Industrial Hygiene job series. (NOTE: An unofficial transcript including date degree conferred, coursework and grades must be submitted with application). A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) (formally known as the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)). (A copy of this certification must be submitted with application). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Evaluation of Education: All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum. In addition to meeting the "Basic Requirements" described above, you must also meet the "Specialized Experience Requirements" described below. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following: Participating in the administration or implementation of an industrial hygiene program to ensure safe work conditions; AND Conducting industrial hygiene surveys and industrial safety evaluations; AND Contributing to the preparation of comprehensive formal reports of survey findings with recommendations for alleviation or elimination of hazards. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP candidates: To be considered "well qualified" you must (1) meet all of the requirements as described in this section; and 2) be rated "well-qualified", which is defined as scoring in the in Well Qualified category (or higher). You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
