Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The Intermediate Care Technician is responsible for performing ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department and assisting with or performing other related technical health care procedures under the supervision of the Emergency Department Physicians as competency is demonstrated and documented. The major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department Evaluating patients for emergency medical conditions, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and performing a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations Assisting Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures Performing airway management using BIPAP and advanced airway techniques including the use of LMA and oral intubations using laryngoscope if properly trained, credentialed and privileged may be included as responsibilities Operating specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus Performing additional duties include dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care Performing specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum is expected to be a routine part of his/her practice Responding to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT) as assigned Conducting or assisting with the training of personnel in CPR, basic, and advanced emergency medical care techniques if appropriately trained and qualified Conducting or assisting with stand-downs, community health programs, blood pressure and glucose screenings, flu immunizations, etc. Transporting monitored and unmonitored patients to diagnostic procedures and/or inpatient units Performing triage duties as assigned. In this situation the incumbents need to have expertise in the use of the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage tool or be trained in its use prior to conducting Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; Work schedule will be discussed during an interview Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as an Intermediate Care Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met. Specialized Experience (GS-07): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-06). Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled (i.e., experience performing patient examination and providing prompt and efficient patient care in an emergency department or similar environment). Qualifying examples of specialized experience include but not limited to: performing patient examination and providing prompt and efficient patient care and appropriate patient handling by applying working knowledge of the major body systems, topographic anatomy, diagnostic signs; understanding protocol-approved list of medications sufficient to properly administer drugs even when directed to do so by the physician; utilizing emergency medicine techniques to determine, based on the diagnosis of the patient; utilizing emergency communication techniques and the operation of communications equipment to accurately obtain and relay information to and from health care providers; and understanding the legal considerations of emergency care, e.g., actual/implied consent, Good Samaritan laws, etc. (CLEAR DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must show complete information for each job entry, such as beginning and ending dates of employment, duties performed, and/or total hours worked per week.) OR, Education (GS-07): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position (Intermediate Care Technician). NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR, Combination (GS-07): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position. AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients.
