Duties

As a Wildlife Biologist, you will perform the following duties: Developing and preparing segments of the park resources management plan dealing with wildlife resources. Attending management and professional conferences for the purpose of exchanging information, presenting technical and policy information, and advancing advocacy for park stewardship. Coordinating the park's wildlife management strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies and preventing human impacts. Writing new monitoring documents that define monitoring techniques. Developing and conducting scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects. Maintaining the integrity of native animal communities, critical habitat, and physical resources and to minimize human activities that impact resources. Performing data collection using the appropriate technology. Preparing environmental assessments (EAs) for projects incompliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Acquiring and maintaining equipment and supplies necessary to conduct field activities. Preparing and maintaining specimens in the natural history collection.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/18/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Candidates who do not meet one of the basic requirements listed below by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. DEGREE: Successful completion of a full four-year course study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field or study or specific course requirements: Biological science that included: At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION of EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include a copy of your transcripts. In addition to the Basic Requirements as listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: coordinating wildlife management strategies and/or programs; developing statistically valid data collection protocols for the monitoring of animal species; and performing data collection using technology. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- COMBINATIONS of EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed graduate-level education semester hours of education (that are in excess of 18 semester hours) by 18. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only graduate-level education in excess of more than one-year may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
