Duties

Range Technicians work under the supervision and guidance of professional range or natural resource specialists related to monitoring rangeland conditions. Ensures grazing permits and leases are in compliance. Inspects grazing allotments, forwards issues to higher graded lead or supervisor. Counts livestock and reports on utilization and grazing impact. Maps out areas of use. Inspects range improvement and makes reports. Range Technicians will provide technical support and assistance in range conservation, range management, and range improvement. They will work under the supervision and guidance of professional range and natural resource specialists. Range Technicians may identify needed range improvements, assists with monitoring agreements and permit projects for conformance to specifications. Other duties may include weed management and monument inventory. Completing range or vegetation condition and trend studies, utilization, actual use, climatological and other allotment evaluation studies. Range Technicians may manage herds of wild horses and burros, process allotment transfers, supervise range use by permits, and investigate unauthorized use.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-6: one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include overseeing and performing maintenance work in connection with range improvements; assisting in enforcement of range rules and regulations; assisting in locating conservation and range improvement projects; and keeping cost account records with responsibility for construction supplies, materials and the maintenance of warehouses; OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. GS-7: one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in the management of public range resources of a district or other specified area by observing and reporting special conditions regarding them; and performing the detailed work necessary to complete specific plans for development of an area for proper range management and conservation; OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands / Work Environment: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Education

If qualifying based on education, you will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and you must submit copies of all transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. If your degree is from a Foreign Institution See Foreign Education.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-6 and 7.
