This position is located at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, in the Natural Resources Division.
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis.
Duties
Performs a wide variety and range of gardening work using independent judgment within the framework of good gardening practices. Prepares soil beds, turf, flower gardens, hedges, walkways, garden fixtures and other planting areas considering the individual needs and characteristics of woody and herbaceous plants.
Works from project plans, master landscape, and long-range plans, making independent judgments within the framework of good gardening practices. Duties may involve assignments related to irreplaceable historic landscapes designated as protected.
Mows and edges lawns to maintain appearance. Determines proper mowing heights. Removes rocks, leaves, limbs, and trash from grounds and garden areas. Sweeps and rakes walks and parking areas. Performs all snow removal operations as needed.
Plants and/or transplants a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, plants and trees. Performs soil tests to determine deficiencies and corrects these deficiencies through application of the appropriate soil amendments. Propagates plants from seeds and cuttings in greenhouse and gardens. Understands and employs best practices for water and fertility in greenhouse operation.
Performs maintenance and limited repairs of watering/irrigation equipment and greenhouse facility.
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.
You will be placed in a pay status and can expect to work a minimum of 13 pay periods not to exceed a maximum of 25 pay periods.
You will be placed in a non-pay status from approximately 1/14 to 1/27 unless other work exists that can be assigned to you during this period. Though my non-pay time may be reduced, I will still be placed in non-pay status for a minimum of 1 pay period in accordance with NPS policy. Additional work must be in concurrence with applicable regulations and policies.

I am able to perform a wide variety and range of gardening work using independent judgment within the framework of good gardening practices. I have experience in preparing soil beds, turf, flower gardens, hedges, walkways, garden fixtures, landscape plantings and other planting areas considering the individual needs and characters of woody and herbaceous plants; working from project plans, master landscape, and long-range plans, such as identifying historic landscapes, their features and potential threats, assessing and recommending landscape preservation maintenance projects, providing technical assistance in the field of historic landscape management and horticulture, and specifying work to be implemented on cultural landscapes; planting a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, plants and trees, and select or recommend plants for a particular purpose; identifying plant materials, identifying and diagnosing insect disease and cultural pressures and recommend control measures; safely operating mowers, backpack blowers, string trimmers, and rotary tillers, use simple hand tools such as pruners, rakes, shovels, and operate 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks to transport materials with a trailer.
