This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serves as Telecommunications Mechanic which requires installing, troubleshooting, modifying, repairing, programing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment.

Duties

Prepares written reports on job delays, system malfunctions, and other operational difficulties. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on the switching system components. Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains range data communications systems, performing programming and repairs. Operates a computer system providing target instructions in real time application programs for an Automated Range Control Systems. Operates motor vehicles (tractor, pick-up truck, all-terrain vehicles, ground maintenance equipment etc.) with a gross weight of up to 30,000 pounds to transport materials, equipment and supplies on the installation.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Telecommunications Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common telecommunications equipment maintenance and repair. I can effectively perform scheduled preventive maintenance on switching system components, subcomponents, peripheral, and other associated telecommunications equipment. I make cable and pair assignments, and makes proper cross connections on a main distribution frame. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Efforts: Work assignments involve standing, climbing, bending, and occasionally working in cramped and awkward positions. Work may require pole climbing (may be as high as 50) and work in congested facilities (may be in claustrophobic confines). Heavy physical effort (in excess of 50 pounds) is exerted while working on lifts, platforms, ladders, and aerial baskets for long periods of time (1 hour or more), and at ground level. Must be able to distinguish colors and shades of colors to distinguish color codes. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed in installing, repairing and testing of data equipment. Working Conditions: Works primarily outside, in dirt, dust and mud. Sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in windy or cold weather is occasionally exposed to possibility of broken bones, electrical shock and burns. Required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and SOPs. Exposed to dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operating remote controlled target devices. Exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, and electrical shock.
