VA South Texas Health Care System is seeking a General Dentist for the North West location in San Antonio, TX.
Duties
The responsibilities of the Staff Dentist position include overall administrative and clinical responsibility for all aspects of the Staff Dentist's dental clinic(s). The Dental Service Administrative Officer and other members of the Dental Service will provide support as needed. The Staff Dentist will work with the Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants and Dental Lab Technicians, and Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residents (AEGD) assigned to the Dental Service. The Staff Dentist will coordinate assignment of responsibilities commensurate with the responsibilities expected of these individuals to maintain efficient clinic operations.
The Staff Dentist will perform all phases of dentistry including but not limited to restorative dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, periodontics (open flap and grafting procedures), endodontics (nickel-titanium rotary instruments), Cerec restorations, oral surgery, and limited orthodontics including Invisalign. The Staff Dentist will also perform placement and restoration of osseointegrated implants using over denture attachments, CAD/CAM patient specific abutments, CAD/CAM bar, hybrids. The Staff Dentist will make implant radiographic and surgical guides and read cone beam x-rays. The Staff Dentist will assess, diagnose, and provide treatment and post-treatment care in all the above areas. The Staff Dentists will provide oversight for community care consults of patients that are assigned to them.
The Staff Dentist will modify care as necessitated by patient's age and abilities (patient transfer and position). The Staff Dentist will provide accurate and understandable instructions to patients and will monitor patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress. The Staff Dentist will participate in patient identification and time out per Joint Commission requirements and will complete annual mandatory patient safety courses.
The Staff Dentist will comply with Employee Education requirements of 40 hours per year and will complete mandatory annual safety training sessions per Medical Center policy. Continuing Education will be identified, planned, supported, documented and validated for each Employee.

Dentist Basic Requirements
Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are
(1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.
(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Residency: Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
License: Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience:
Completion of a AEGD program or 5 years experience in dentistry
Experience with digital dentistry
Experience with Endodontic procedures
Familiarity with surgical procedures
Customer Service oriented - good Communication skills
Commitment to VHA organization goals
