The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, is Apr-Dec, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated entry on duty is April 2024 Not to Exceed 12/21/2024.
This position is located in a National Park Service organization. The purpose of the position is to perform uncomplicated technical archeological tasks.
Duties
Participate in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts.
Prepare archeological site maps.
Record archeological field data and prepare survey records.
Compile archeology field survey information into an archeological site form.
Identify and record a prehistoric/historic site through the artifacts and features found on the landscape.
Identify and evaluate artifacts indicative of prehistoric and historic occupation.
Conducted limited, supervised excavation and testing of sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials.
Complete standard feature and level forms.
Maintain field equipment and supplies.
Take photographs of archeological sites, features, and artifacts.
Take field notes of archeological field survey.
Use a topographic map to navigate to archeological sites in the field without the assistance of GPS.
Use a compass to perform archeological surveys and navigate in the field.
Use a GPS for recording data related to archeological sites.
Use basic excavation tools (trowel, shovel, line level) to conduct archeological fieldwork.
Use an archeological screen to recover artifacts.
Process pre-contact and historical artifacts recovered from the field to help determine function, time period, and/or cultural affiliation.
Use basic laboratory methods to prepare artifacts for long-term, museum-quality curation.
Accession and catalog artifacts in preparation for curation.
Prepare charcoal or other organic specimens to be sent to laboratories for radiocarbon analysis.
Perform flotation of soil samples.
Prepare archeological site surface artifact analysis forms or documents.
Interact with the general public, scientists, archaeologists, historians, or other subject-matter specialists, who have a professional interest in the values represented by the archaeological, historical, or scientific site.
Write or edit archeological site forms and reports.
Evaluate both popular and specialized literature for continued factual accuracy in light of current research findings and make revisions.
Prepare cultural resource compliance documents for construction and maintenance projects.
Perform data entry related to archeological artifact and project data (artifact information, catalog records, field notes, site records, etc.) into automated systems, appropriate forms and archival records.
Use computer applications for database management and data analysis.
Use imaging and graphics software.
Produce documents, reports, and presentations, integrating a variety of software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/19/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, duties associated with performing uncomplicated technical archeological tasks under direct technical supervision of an archeological specialist; applies technical methods and procedures to perform routine archeological testing and monitoring tasks; knowledge of prehistoric and historic cultures of the Northeastern US; ability to utilize standard laboratory methods to prepare artifacts for testing, curation, and storage; ability and skill in using basic tools and equipment common to archeological functions; ability to conduct testing of sites through shovel excavations and screen materials for artifacts; ability to communicate information clearly and effectively; ability to conduct basic historical research; ability to utilize a computer to write brief technical reports summarizing findings of field work. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed a four-year course of study in an accredited educational institution above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related fields; You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
