Duties

Duties of this position include: Operates and performs operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, jeeps, and stations wagons. Vehicles are driven on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules over public roads (or the equivalent) at highway speeds to transport personnel, supplies, materials, or equipment and tools or to tow equipment throughout rural or urban areas (various kinds of traffic) and varying weather conditions. Loads cargo onto vehicles, using appropriate tie-downs such as chains, binders, or straps for transit on public roads at highway speeds or under similar driving conditions. Safely transports passengers or cargo to their destination throughout rural or urban areas on park and/or public roads in a full range of traffic conditions (or the equivalent). Performs routine grounds/trails maintenance including trash collection and mowing, raking and trimming. AREA INFORMATION Lowell National Historical Park is located in Lowell, Massachusetts, which is 35 miles northwest of Boston and served by Boston commuter rail service. The history of America's Industrial Revolution is commemorated in downtown Lowell. The Boott Cotton Mills Museum with its weave room of 88 operating looms, "mill girl" boardinghouses, the Suffolk Mill turbine, and guided tours tell the story of transition from farm to factory, chronicle immigrant and labor history, and trace industrial technology. The City of Lowell is centrally located in New England with a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities easily accessible. Beaches and mountains are within a two-hour drive. The University of Massachusetts at Lowell, as well as colleges and universities in the Boston area provide many cultural and educational opportunities. The restaurants in Lowell reflect the dynamic composition of the city. Temperatures range from the high teens in winter to 80 degrees or more in summer. A great variety of services are available in the area, including, medical, schools, churches, shopping, etc. Homes and rentals are readily available and are considered expensive.

Screenout: Ability to do the work without more than normal supervision For this position, work is defined as operating heavy power equipment, such as single-function power lawn mowers with one or more cutting decks and mechanical controls, hand power equipment, such as chain saws, jackhammers, and a variety of types of common hand tools and light power tools (such as shovels, racks, lawn edging equipment, circular saws, electric drills, etc.), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, and trails. I have also been responsible for operating light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, etc.) to safely transport personnel, materials, or equipment to work sites. Dig ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact; break up pavement or concrete; mix and pour concrete, asphalt, and hot / cold mix; fill and level holes in damaged roads. Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Move furniture, paint picnic tables and signs, trim trees and shrubbery, picks up litter and clean fire pits. Perform basic equipment maintenance on mowers and other similar equipment including adjusting blades, cleaning, lubricating and oiling. Lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance. Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however, you must be able to demonstrate the rough experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.
