This position is located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in the Natural Resources Management Division. Open to the first 101 applicants or until 03/14/2024 whichever comes first. (NOTE: Area restriction does NOT apply to preference eligible veterans).

Duties

Note that if you are graduating at the end of spring 2024 or Summer 2024 semester, and not continuing your education, you are not eligible for this internship. You must be enrolled as a student while employed as an intern. Please ensure you submit proper documentation reflecting current enrollment and if enrolled for fall semester. If graduating with the next few months you may need to provide proof of enrollment or acceptance for continuing your education in order to be eligible. This is an indefinite, Excepted Service appointment that may continue if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available. Conversion: Pathways Interns may be converted to a term or permanent position upon program completion. This is not automatic nor guaranteed; it is at the discretion of the employing office. To be eligible for conversion, an Intern must: (1) be converted within 120 days of successful degree completion; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Program while enrolled as a half/full-time degree/certificate-seeking student, or meet exception; (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted; (5) receive a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement. Duties of the position may include the following, Implement established natural resource management projects. Conduct surveys and monitoring of threatened and endangered native wildlife species. Conductes predator control field work to protect threatened and endangered native wildlife species based on the priorities identified by the wildlife biologist. Maintains detailed records of data collected in the field, performs data entry, and analyzes data using standard statistical methods and procedures. Works cooperatively with NPS biologists, other park staff, external university partners, and contractors. Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment (e.g., tools, traps, and sampling, monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment). Maintains on-the-job safety awareness while conducting field and office activities. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/14/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience for this position is work involving one or more aspects of conducting field inventory, monitoring, and management activities associated with a wildlife management program. This would include conducting biological inventory and monitoring activities through field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence, abundance, habitat characteristics, management issues, and population dynamics using established protocols and standard scientific equipment; maintaining and organizing wildlife data using computer software such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Word, and ArcGIS; and summarizing data and documenting field activities in reports. -OR- EDUCATION- I have 1 full year of graduate study leading to a Master's degree with major study in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours in any of these courses must be directly related to the position to be filled such as wildlife biology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
