The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for an Escort Position. The Escort will function in the Patient Transfer Center (PTC) section of Patient Care Administrative Service (PCAS).

Duties

Duties of an Escort includes but are not limited to: Observes and monitors patients during transportation, informing medical staff of any significant changes in patient's conditions during transportation. Recognizes emergency situations (i.e., codes, disasters, fire and safety issues) and takes appropriate and immediate action. Transports specimens, records, medications, personal belongings, other patient support equipment and supplies between patient care units or facilities as needed. Protects the patient's information and materials during these transports. Provides for the safety and comfort of the patient/resident by application of safety and comfort devices, as ordered. Safely uses equipment for patient/resident care including wheelchairs, lifts, stretchers, and transfer devices. Performs ancillary services, such as identifying and reporting unsafe equipment and conditions, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, properly caring for equipment and escorting patient/resident on and off the Medical Center. Cleans transport equipment in between each patient with appropriate chemicals following service procedures. Incumbent also ensures that equipment is deep cleaned as per the schedule and must be able to operate the sections decontamination room. Practices techniques and principles of medical asepsis and infection control, e.g., hand washing, standard precautions, etc. Must be aware of and actively practice principles of standard precautions. Observes patient/resident and reports changes in appearance, including physical and emotional reactions. Reports patient/resident complaint of pain to RN/LPN. Observes and reports evidence of physical and/or verbal abuse of patient/resident. Assists with safeguarding patient/resident effects and valuables. Receives and directs patients and visitors, answering routine inquiries, and making appropriate referral of questions concerning patients' conditions. Answers many questions, often posed repeatedly, and there is sufficient variance that answers cannot be prepared in advance. Responsible for ensuring that all equipment assigned to the section is properly maintained and ready for the next patient. Must have a great many facts in his/her mind and be able to sort them out promptly and give answers independent of each specific question or situation. Recognizes questions and situations which should be referred to the supervisor. Provides a basis for the customer's first impression of the healthcare system. Independently provides transport assistance to patients/residents. Works with little supervision to organize/prioritize numerous requests from all units/services for escort support.
