Duties

Duties listed are at the Journeyman level. Incumbent(s) will be expected to complete the 4 year Apprentice Program to perform the following: Perform skilled journeyman industrial facility and equipment maintenance work involving welding, operating cranes, rigging, pipefitting, etc. Troubleshoot, repair and install heavy industrial equipment, such as power plant turbines, generators, governors, penstocks, spillways, intakes, etc.; Fabricate, repair, and/or maintain industrial machinery parts requiring tolerances to +/- .0005. Prepare, cut, thread, bend, weld and install air, water, gas, oil, hydraulic, and refrigeration piping in power plant, dam and other structures; - Perform hydroelectric power plant operations including starting, stopping, switching, hazardous energy control, and load/voltage control. Operate and use a variety of equipment, tools, and machinery such as grinders, lathes, milling machines, drill presses, forklifts, motorized man-lifts, a variety of cranes, etc. Physical Effort: Exerts moderately heavy physical effort which includes lifting and carrying items weighing 50 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. Climbing ladders and stairs, walking, standing, kneeling, crawling, or bending for long periods of time may be required in performing duties. Duties may also involve working from suspended scaffolding and motorized man-lifts at substantial heights and working in closed restricted quarters and confined spaces. Working Conditions: The work is accomplished in and around dams, power plants, and related facilities with exposure to high levels of noise, moving parts, hazardous materials, and electrical hazards. Work is also performed outside under prevailing weather and terrain conditions. Some work assignments are performed in confined spaces, closed and restricted quarters, and at substantial heights.

Education

Apprenticeship Program:The training portion of this program will be in accordance with the National Apprenticeship and Training Standards approved by the U.S. Department of Labor for the positions at the Colorado River Storage Project Power Office. The apprenticeship program for these positions consists of 8,000 hours in a 4-year training program composed of eight 6-month segments. Each 6-month segment consists of 1,000 hours in a combination of work experience and related theoretical instruction; any lost time during a segment must be made up before an Apprentice can be advanced to the next segment.

The apprentice will be enrolled in a course of related theoretical instruction as provided by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee and the employer, for not less than 144 hours a year for a total of 576 hours. The formal training courses may entail 10 to 15 hours or more each week on your personal time. Failure to perform satisfactorily in either phase of the training may be cause for removal from the program.
