This position is located in a State, Area or Field Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The incumbent provides civil engineering technician field assistance, develops final construction drawings for engineering structures, performs computations for NRCS projects, & performs engineering field surveys. Provides technical support to computer aided design (CAD) & users of global positioning system (GPS) hardware and software.

Duties

Provide civil engineering technician field assistance and perform engineering field surveys. Perform hydrologic and hydraulic computations for NRCS projects. Coordinate work with technical specialists in NRCS offices, partner agencies, and conservation districts. Review surveys and alignment data for accuracy and completeness. Use computer-aided drafting and design software (CADD) and other engineering design system software to complete and modify engineering drawings.

  • Physical Demands: Some of the work is performed outdoors requires physical exertion from long periods of standing and walking over field terrain, bending, and lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds. The employee may operate a motor vehicle.
  • Work Environment: Work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts while working in outdoor conditions involving exposure to rain and cold/hot weather in order to complete field work. Safety clothing may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: GS-10Specialized Experience: One or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties: Performing CADD work, including topographic maps, geologic investigation sheets, flood plain maps, snow surveys, and related graphs and charts; Reviewing engineering designs and plans for accuracy; Making recommendations to engineers for required or recommended changes to survey data; Performing engineering surveys using global positioning system (GPS) technologies; and Assisting with technical training for computer-aided drafting and design software (CADD) users. (Your resume must CLEARLY demonstrate this experience) OR Education: Must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of graduate education in engineering or other directly related field. (Must submit transcripts.) OR Combination: Must possess a combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described directly above that total 100% when combined. First, determine total qualifying experience as a percentage of the specialized experience described above; then determine the education as a percentage of the graduate education described above; and then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Only graduate education in excess of two years (36 semester hours) may be used when combining education and experience for this grade. (Must submit transcripts.)
