About the Position: You will perform quantitative and qualitative chemical and microbiological analyses of water samples to determine treatment required for safe and potable water. Responsible for selecting and performing established methods, procedures, and analyses for process control and regulatory monitoring purposes. Exercise a good working knowledge of a variety of instruments and equipment used in making and interpreting quantitative and qualitative analyses.

Duties

Perform quantitative and qualitative chemical and microbiological analyses of water samples to determine treatment required for safe and potable water. Compile data for regulatory compliance reports and other analytical requirements. Write laboratory procedures. Initiate or conduct drinking water research to determine sources of contamination and means of control, and to develop improved methods of treatment.

  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Must wear a laboratory coat and safety glasses while performing analyses and utilize other personal protective equipment as required by the nature of the task being performed.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Research Biologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement for Research Microbiologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement for Research Chemist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Assisting in performing chemical analyses and tests on a broad range of water samples; (2) Exploring Flame Resistant treatments on military relevant fabrics to improve performance against currently fielded garments; and (3) Reviewing chemical properties and physical state of samples; (4) assist in writing reports on studies based on findings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Oral CommunicationProject ManagementScientific Research Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
