You will serve as a SUPERVISORY INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) of NMRTC BREMERTON WA. This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will provide technical assistance in matters of industrial hygiene and toxicology to industrial hygienists, physicians, safety officers, commanding officers, employee organization and other federal agency personnel. You will manage the quality improvement program for the Industrial Hygiene Department. You will establish procedure and provide state of the art technical training, information, guidance, and direction on industrial hygiene/toxicology matters. You will prepare draft instructions and manual for guidance. You will provide technical review of industrial hygiene survey reports. You will set priorities, prepare schedules, and plan work to be accomplished by subordinates. You will develop performance standards and evaluate performance of subordinates. You will interview candidates for positions w/the Industrial Hygiene department. You will hear and resolve complaint from employees.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual In order to qualify for this position your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Your resume is the key means we have for evaluating your skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to this position. Therefore, we encourage you to be clear and specific when describing your experience. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing advice and direction for a broad range of industrial hygiene maters, including the difficult types of industrial hygiene evaluations; Applying new techniques, technical advances to solve novel or obscure problems which are not readily treatable by conventional methods; Training industrial hygienists, occupational safety and health personnel, management, supervisors and employees; Recognizing management practices, theories, and techniques w/an understanding of organizational structures, functions, procedures and applicable regulations as relate to the Industrial Hygiene environment; Supervising personnel, (i.e. rendering technical advice and direction on industrial hygiene sampling and analysis technique; discussing field survey finding; discussing technical issues and control recommendations, resolving technical disagreements; setting priorities, preparing schedules, and planning work to be accomplished; etc.); AND Providing advice and assistance w/regard to experimental operations where protection of workers from hazards must be weighed against the developmental needs for new products or processes. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; (Your transcripts must be attached.) Failure to submit a copy of your transcripts with your application will result in an ineligible rating.

OR

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH). (A copy of your license or registration must be attached) Failure to submit a copy of your license or registration with your application will result in an ineligible rating.

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.


Evaluation of Education - All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.

Evaluation of Education
